The Pietenpol Sky Scout UM was designed as a lower-cost, follow-up to the enormously popular Air Camper, Bernie Pietenpol’s first homebuilt design. A less expensive (at the time) Ford Model T engine was used, rather than the more current Ford Model A engine of the time. The aircraft was redesigned to use the heavier, lower-powered engine by making it to a single-seat aircraft. The new location for the pilot required a section called a "flop" to be installed in the wing. Essentially, a section of the wing was hinged up to allow the pilot to stand up when getting into and out of the aircraft.
