The economical, reliable T3 van was produced from 1979. The completely newly developed car with its modern, functional design was visibly more spacious than its predecessor. As the last type produced by VW with a rear engine, it was considered the last true Bulli. Depending on the version, its four-cylinder offered 50 to 112 horsepower. As usual, the Transporter appeared in various commercial vehicle versions, but also in the form of the camping bus for private purposes. In particular, the successful version of the Joker from the Gütersloh-based company Westfalia, with which VW had been cooperating successfully since the 1950s, enjoyed great popularity. The Westfalia Joker was ideally suited as a multifunctional vehicle for the way to work, for daily use, but also for longer vacation trips. Over 70,000 units of this home on wheels were sold, proving its great popularity both at home and abroad. Its comfortable living space with integrated driver's cab had a complete kitchen unit, seating and reclining areas, storage cupboards and a practical pop-up roof.
